My senior year of college I took an Advertising 101 class where our professor made us give 30-60 second pitches each class. It wasn’t until mid-semester when a girl stood up to pitch the class, “Why we should shop at Nasty Gal.” My first reaction was, “Ew, why would someone name a store that!” as I listened to her pitch I was like wow this brand seems kind of cool.
Fast forward a year and a half later and here I am just finished reading #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso author, founder and owner of Nasty Gal and possibly my newest inspiration. Why may you ask is she my new inspiration? Not because I like fashion or because the book was downright amazing. It’s because she has incredible work ethic and is a true girl boss.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is having doubts in their career or looking for a little inspiration, as Amoruso tells the story of her rebellious life and finding her way to owning a successful business and brand.
Throughout the book Amoruso seemed like the girl you may see walking down the street who looks like they just don’t care what they look like or about life. You may think to yourself as you walk by, “wow that person will never have a job “or “wow they need to get their life together” and somehow they prove you wrong. And that’s just what Amorous did!
At seventeen Amoruso rather be hitchhiking, dumpster diving and looking to hold a part-time job. After years of living what she thought to be “the cool life” she realized she had to get her life together and with that click she began her business on eBay. Amoruso shows readers that no matter where you are in life there is hope. Okay, lets be real, she teaches readers how to work hard, believe in themselves, and channel their passions into a career they are proud of.
Amoruso isn’t just an inspiration, but someone who shows us that life is really what you put into it and if you create your own path and work hard you can make your dreams happen.
